Goal umpire Luke Walker was announced as the Leigh Keen Shield winner for the fourth time on Sunday. The award is the highest that can be bestowed on a goal umpire. Luke was voted by his peers as the umpire who most typified the criteria, achieving on field success, actively contributing to and supporting the AFLUA and role modelling the attributes of commitment, loyalty and dedication.

Veteran field umpire draws the curtain on his career
Veteran field umpire, Chris Kamolins has called stumps on his 207-game career to take up a role as General Manager Fisher and Paykel Healthcare in India. Speaking with Chris over the past few days he reflected fondly on his footy involvement but said, “this was too good an offer to refuse and it’s time to put my family and my future career first.”
Work experience at the AFLUA
On the 26th of November, 2017 I started my work experience with the AFLUA. This is an environment I was familiar with as I am an umpire myself and have worked in sport. Through the week I have had here, I learnt and grasped a new look on the business side of the AFLUA and what happens behind the scenes.
Wadey goes back to his bucket list
2012 proved to be pivotal in the life of Dr Nick Wade. The oft told (by the writer) story of him receiving word from the AFL while traveling to Melbourne in his kombi van with his wife Carmel, that he was to be offered an AFL contract, radically rearranged his holiday and forced him to run beside Carmel who was driving the van. This turned his AFL story into somewhat of a Cinderella fairytale, partly embellished by my (the writer’s) imagination, that captivated the umpiring panel.
