Former AFL Goal Umpire Mark Ensbey has been awarded an Honorary AFLUA Life Membership for his extraordinary commitment to umpiring.
Mark’s journey as an AFL goal umpire began in 2014 when he made his debut in Round 6, officiating the Western Bulldogs and Adelaide at Etihad Stadium, awarding him Heritage number 337.

Mark’s AFL career was also more unique than most. Being the only AFL listed umpire in Tasmania, he had incredible self-motivation to maintain the standards required whilst often being isolated from the rest of his colleagues. Mark also faced the challenge of having an overnight flight and stay away from home involved in most of his appointments, a mountain of effort behind the 114 games he officiated.
Mark is a full-time Carer for his wife Amanda, and at the beginning of 2023, whilst retirement plans were not on his immediate radar, a decision to commit more time and support for his family became the priority.
He formally finished his career at the end of 2022 with 114 AFL matches across nine years at the elite level.
Mark was nominated for Honorary Life Membership by current AFL goal umpires Steve Piperno and Michael Craig. Steve spoke highly of Mark’s career following his retirement, stating that his success “has clearly shaped the Tasmanian umpiring pathway, and will provide opportunities for Tasmanian umpires for generations to come.”
“Mark is an extremely genuine and authentic person, which made him a pleasure to umpire with. He has always cared for the well-being of others, whilst also bringing a sense of humour and fun to the group.”
Mark has left behind a strong legacy as a significant umpiring figure in Tasmania, and continues to be a mentor and leader for future umpires in the State. He will receive Honorary AFLUA Life Membership for his contributions at an upcoming AFLUA event.
