Veteran Umps Earn AFL Life Membership

Mar 11, 2026

Congratulations to Ian Burrows  and Jeff Dalgleish, who were awarded AFL Life Membership at the AFL’s Season Launch on Wednesday night in Sydney.

Burrows has rendered exceptional service to the game of Australian football over more than two decades, both on and off the field. His umpiring record stands among the finest in the history of the VFL/AFL and reflects not only remarkable skill and consistency as a boundary umpire, but also outstanding leadership, mentorship, and a deep commitment to the values and growth of the game.

His on-field achievements are well documented and include, at the time of nomination:

  • Umpired 436 AFL matches as a boundary umpire (currently 439 matches).
  • The second-highest number of matches officiated by a boundary umpire in VFL/AFL history (having since surpassed the all-time record).
  • Appointmentto 48 AFL finals, equal all-time record for a boundary umpire (has now umpired 50 AFL finals).
  • Officiated 10 AFL Grand Finals (2008; 2010 and 2010 Replay; 2012; 2014; 2015; 2016; 2019; 2020; and 2023).
  • Twenty consecutive years on the AFL Umpires List (2006–present).
  • All-Australian Boundary Umpire honours in 2010, 2012, and 2015.

Beyond his on-field excellence, Burrows has made a significant contribution to the development of umpiring through leadership and mentorship at all levels of the game. He has mentored AFL, state league, and junior umpires nationwide in both formal and informal capacities. He has helped with match-day coaching of VFL and national championship umpires and mentoring of first-year umpires on the AFL list.

Burrows served on the AFL Umpires’ Association (AFLUA) Executive in 2013 and 2014 and was a member of the AFL Boundary Umpires’ Leadership Group in 2016 and 2017. He has also supported the growth of umpiring through active involvement in the AFL’s Community Education Roadshows and as an ambassador for his former local league, the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League.

In addition, Burrows is a strong supporter of the AFLUA’s Fiona McBurney Program and has organised umpiring teams for the Eastern 80 Charity Bike Ride, which has raised more than $100,000 for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the game, Burrows was awarded AFLUA Life Membership in 2015. He is a two-time recipient of the Murray Williams Shield, the AFLUA’s most prestigious award for boundary umpires (2014 and 2016), and was awarded the Bill Sutton Medallion in 2007 as the most promising first- or second-year umpire.

Former field umpire Jeff Dalgleish qualified for AFL Life Membership, having officiated in over 300 games before his retirement at the close of the 2025 season. Dalgleish’s total was comprised of 274 premiership, 24 preseason, and 4 AFLW matches.

Taking up umpiring in 1999 with the East Fremantle Juniors, Jeff’s accession to professional umpiring was swift. Progressing to the WAFL panel in 2003, he spent six years refining his craft in the state league before receiving the call for national duties in 2009. Dalgleish debuted in round 5 of the 2009 season, officiating in Fremantle’s 21 point win over Sydney at Subiaco Oval.

Across his career, Dalgleish umpired an impressive 278 AFL matches, alongside 119 WAFL league matches and one VFL match, bringing his career total to 398 senior league matches. That tally ranks him third among WANFLUA field umpires, behind only Brett Rosebury and Dean Margetts – a remarkable achievement that reflects both longevity and elite performance.

Joined by his AFL boundary umpire brother Brett Dalgleish throughout his career, the brothers each reached their 100 game milestones together in 2015. That same year they became the second pair of brothers to umpire an AFL final together (twin brothers, Reg and Keith Pawley goal umpired together in the first ever qualifying final in 1972).

During the mid 2010s Dalgleish rose to become one of the best performing AFL field umpires. In 2015 his excellence was rewarded with appointment to the Grand Final, where Hawthorn would achieve their incredible three-peat.

In 2022, Jeff was named alongside his brother Brett Dalgleish – a boundary umpire who also retired in 2025 – in the WANFLUA Team of the Decade, highlighting the significant impact the Dalgleish family has had on Australian football umpiring.

The AFLUA would like to congratulate both Ian and Jeff on their achievements and thank them for their lasting contributions to the game of AFL football.
