Field umpire Robert Miller commenced his umpiring career in 1946 in the East Suburban Churches football competition as a boundary umpire in 1946.  Two years later he was accepted onto the VFL Reserve Grade as a field umpire where he umpired until the end of 1950.  Robert was admitted onto the VFL senior panel in 1951 where he umpired until his retirement in 1962.

In that time Robert umpired 6 VFL second 18 matches, 180 VCFL games including 4 grand finals and 5 Metropolitan games.

Robert was made a life member of the VFLUA in 1962.  He returned to the East Suburban Churches competition in 1963 until his retirement at the end of 1966.

Robert passed away on November 15, aged 87, in Tasmania.  He is survived by his wife Joan and their family.
