Peter Marshall named in King’s Birthday honours for service to umpiring

Jun 10, 2025

AFLUA and VFUA alumni Peter Marshall has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to Australian rules football.

Marshall has a brief stint as a V/AFL field umpire in 1978 before returning in 1989-1990, umpiring four AFL matches and earning heritage number 332.

Across all levels of football however, Marshall has officiated in over 1500 Aussie rules games across his 50 years of involvement in the sport.

Currently a match day observer with the VFL, Marshall has umpired, coached or administered (usually a combination of the three) in no less than six footy leagues, ranging from the AFL to the South Metro Junior Football League.

Since 2019, Marshall has been the Senior Umpiring Squad Coach for the Victorian Amateur Football Association, Victoria’s largest senior community AFL competition.

A versatile sportsman, Marshall has also had a long career in cricket, currently coaching Victorian Premier club Frankston Penninsula.

A handy player himself, Marshall played Dowling Shield for Melbourne University but put his cricketing on hold for nine years when his umpiring took off.

The AFLUA offers our warm congratulations to Peter on his much deserved award.
