Hayden Kennedy Inducted into AFL Hall of Fame

Jun 10, 2026

Congratulations to Hayden Kennedy, who was inducted into the AFL Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday night, becoming the 15th umpire to earn the honour in the history of the game.

Kennedy is one of the most respected and influential figures in Australian Football umpiring and coaching. His remarkable contribution over nearly four decades—as an elite field umpire, national umpiring coach, and leader in talent development—has elevated the profession and left an enduring legacy across the game. He retired as an AFL umpire in 2011, holding the all-time games record at that stage with 495 matches. His career narrowly missed the milestone 500th game, cut short by a persistent hamstring injury.

A five-time Grand Final umpire, Kennedy made his senior debut at just 22 years of age and quickly earned a reputation as a relentless trainer with strong empathy for players and an exceptional ability to build respectful relationships with the game’s competitors. Across his distinguished career, he officiated 39 finals and three state games, cementing his standing as one of the most respected umpires of his era.

Kennedy’s commitment to umpiring extended well beyond his on-field career. He went on to coach AFL umpires from 2013 to 2021 and now holds the same leadership role with the Victorian Football League, continuing to shape and mentor the next generation of elite officials.

The AFLUA congratulates Hayden on his induction into the AFL Football Hall of Fame!
