Matt started umpiring in 2002 in Albury as a boundary umpire for pocket money. Playing junior football at the time, playing and running the boundary on the same day proved too difficult. Wanting to stay involved in umpiring, Matt swapped his whistle for the flags, taking up goal umpiring in 2003 when he was 13. Having umpired for 5 seasons in Albury and after finishing high school in 2007, Matt moved to Melbourne in 2008 and made the VFL Development Squad. He umpired for a further 5 season in the VFL from 2008-2012. After taking time off in 2013 and 2014 for knee surgery and rehab, he returned to the VFL in 2015. After umpiring the VFL Grand Final in 2016 he was promoted to the AFL in 2017.
