The AFLUA would like to congratulate Nathan Toner who has been appointed to the AFL Field Umpire Squad, replacing Shaun Ryan who retired at the end of the 2020 season.

Nathan started out with the Essendon District Football League when he was 13 to earn a bit of pocket money whilst he was playing footy.  He quickly progressed to the VFL in 2016 whilst in Year 12 at school, where he spent a year on the Development Squad. In 2017, he advanced to the Senior Development Squad before being appointed to the VFL Senior Squad in 2018.

His statistics include 28 AFLW, 41 VFL, 1 NEAFL, 11 VFL Reserves, 18 NAB Boy and 7 VFLW games.  He umpired the 2016 VFLW Grand Final, 2017 TAC Cup Grand Final, participated in the U16 and U18 National Championships, and umpired the 2019 and 2021 AFLW grand finals. He was also an AFL Rookie (Accelerator) from 2019-2021.

Congratulations Nathan and we wish you all the best for the year ahead!
