Six umpire recruits join the draft combine and four make it to the AFL list
The AFL umpiring department has embarked on a football style approach to their list management process for 2015. In the past 16 years field umpires deemed good enough were put through a trial period between November and March where a decision was made about their elevation to a first year contract. They trained, were coached and umpired NAB Cup games to determine their bona fides.

AFL boundary umpire heads north
When AFL boundary umpire Patrick Tongue decided he needed a change of scenery for the next 15 months he didn’t mean heading north to Queensland. He was referring to a 14,685 kilometre journey to Switzerland.

Recognition for umps
Umpires from around the region were recognised at the annual AFL North East Border Umpire Awards held at the Commercial Club Albury last week.
Vale John Leighton
AFLUA life member, John Leighton passed away on grand final day, aged 82. His funeral was held in Cobden last week. John’s son, Peter said today, his father loved his umpiring and said that he had travelled extensively with John during his umpiring days on the VFL panel all over country Victoria. “Dad umpired with Alan Nash and Harry Beitzel, he loved it.” John was a regular at our annual dinners over many years.
Two greats announce their retirements
Three hundred and nineteen game veteran, Mark Canning has decided to hand up his flags after 21 years on the AFL list. The announcement was made at the umpires cocktail party on Saturday night.
