The rapid rise of Brent Wallace’s umpiring stocks have culminated in the son of former Hawthorn player and ex-Richmond and Western Bulldogs coach Terry being promoted to the AFL’s senior umpiring panel for 2015.
The AFL umpiring department has embarked on a football style approach to their list management process for 2015. In the past 16 years field umpires deemed good enough were put through a trial period between November and March where a decision was made about their elevation to a first year contract. They trained, were coached and umpired NAB Cup games to determine their bona fides.

John’s son, Peter said today, his father loved his umpiring and said that he had travelled extensively with John during his umpiring days on the VFL panel all over country Victoria. “Dad umpired with Alan Nash and Harry Beitzel, he loved it.” John was a regular at our annual dinners over many years.
