Five State League field umpires have been selected to attend the AFLUD “draft combine” that will take place over two days later this week.

The AFL Field Umpires gathered at Bar 9T4 in Richmond on Sunday to celebrate ‘Silly Sunday’, the end of the footy season – with an Olympic theme.

Field umpires’ assistant coach, Michael Vozzo took one last long stroll on the MCG playing surface last Thursday evening reflecting on an AFL career that saw him start his career as an umpire in the 1994 TAC Cup Grand Final on the MCG in his first year on the VFL development panel.  Michael went on to forge a very good career as one of the game’s best officiators.

And then there were nine.

Bob Barkley umpired 165 VCFL games between 1961 and 1970 and became a life member of the association in 1971.

Former AFL goal umpire Sergio Villagra was presented with his life membership at the NSWUA appointment night in Nth Sydney on Tuesday night.

The last of our State League grand finals are held this weekend in our three traditional football heartlands.  It doesn’t matter whether you are the most credentialed, you have to be the best performed to enjoy the thrill of participating in the biggest games in each of those competitions.
