Watching goal umpires over the years, you know that each of them develop their own idiosyncrasies that sit in the back of your mind.  On-field it is the straight back of David Flegg with the slight grin escaping from the corner of his mouth, Peter Nastasi’s barrel chest in those tight shirts.  David Dixon’s speed, Luke Walker’s reading of the play to always be in perfect position (well it seems that way from a novice like me). Off field it is the strength of Chris Appleton and then there is Willo.

Round 2 – shorts

Two field umpires bit the dust prior to the commencement of the round which saw David Harris and  Leigh Fisher come in for their first games of the season.  Scott Jeffery (back) and Jason Armstrong (calf) were the two umpires who were replaced.

Sydney boys looking for a great 2014

The hard work over summer has been done as we caught up with the Sydney based panel on the eve of their round one clash, “the battle of the bridge” on Saturday. There was an air of anticipation as they embarked on their final training session. Looking relaxed and tanned each spoke about their aims and what they were looking forward to in season 2014. A young guy from Sydney makes good

Twenty-two year old Liam Rowe has completed his first AFL trial as a field umpire and performed well enough to take a rookie spot on the 2014 panel. He joins Brent Pawley who has been rookied for the second year in a row, still searching for that elusive place on the full panel.

Rosebury receives AFL life membership

Rosebury receives AFL life membership

Field umpire Brett Rosebury was awarded his AFL life membership by AFL Commission chairman, Mike Fitzpatrick at last week’s AFL season launch at the newly revamped, Adelaide Oval. Brett was presented along with Sydney coach, John Longmire, Geelong Coach, Chris Scott and players, Ryan O’Keefe, Joel Corey and Lenny Hayes for achieving 300 matches of AFL football. Dr Harry Unglik, David Smorgan and Brian Sierakowski were awarded their life memberships for providing “special service to the game.”
