Legends Match Returns – Over 1 Million Raised for Prostate Cancer Research

Aug 29, 2025

After a six-year break, the Legends Match made its much-anticipated return to Marvel Stadium on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

The event raised over $1 million for the Australian Prostate Centre, while also drawing the biggest AFL television audience of the year, with more than 2.3 million Australians tuning in across Seven and 7plus Sport.

This year’s clash carried added significance, marking the 30th anniversary of the passing of E.J. Whitten, one of Australian football’s greatest legends, who lost his battle with prostate cancer in 1995. The Legends Match was first introduced the following year in his honour and has since become a cornerstone of football’s contribution to raising awareness and funds for prostate cancer research.

On the field, fans were treated to a thrilling contest. The All-Stars edged out Victoria in a nail-biting finish, 3.13.7 (112) to 3.11.11 (104), keeping spectators on the edge of their seats until the final siren.

The umpiring team on the night featured both familiar and fresh faces. Recent retirees Chris Donlon and Ray Chamberlain returned to the field alongside Matthew Head and Chris Kamolins, while boundary duties were carried out by Sam Leslie, Matthew Vitiritti, Peter McDonald, and Darren Wilson. In the goals, Luke Walker, Chris Appleton, and Daniel Wilson shared goal umpiring responsibilities.

The AFLUA would like to thank our umpiring panel who volunteered their time to officiate his match. Special thanks to Ben Carbonara for his support of the umpires on the night.
