Season 2025
Afl and aflw umpire appointments & milestones

Welcome to the AFL Umpires’ Association
The primary role of the AFLUA is to represent the collective interests of AFLUA members to the AFL in matters relating to their current or past employment as an umpire by the AFL or VFL, to maintain and promote the history, heritage and traditions of AFL umpiring and the AFLUA, and to actively engage with members and past members through our social media and communication channels, recognition of milestones and achievements, and social events.
LAWS OF THE GAME
The Rules Explained in 2025
The AFL has released three videos to help explain to fans, players, and umpires alike some of the most important laws of Australian Rules Football. These laws are high contact, insufficient intent, and holding the ball. The full Laws of Australian Football 2025 booklet can be found at the bottom of the webpage.

Fiona mcburney match day experience
Supporting Down Syndrome Victoria: The Fiona McBurney Match Day Experience
The Fiona McBurney Match Day Experience aims to connect sport and disability by providing a unique experience for individuals to undertake an official guest AFL trainer role for the AFL umpires on match day. The program is highlighted in a video which formed part of a presentation made by Daniel Payne, CEO of Down Syndrome Victoria at the World Down Syndrome Congress 2024.
“I Was Out There”
The Best Seat in the House: Why We Umpire
Behind every demonstration of brilliance, every moment of football folklore, every game deciding goal, or act of courage and determination, is an umpire, dutifully adjudicating the game that they love.
For the recent AFLUA Hall of Fame Night, the AFLUA wanted to commission a video that captured the immersion of umpires in our great game, and could be used to promote umpiring. AFLUA CEO, Rob Kerr, had an idea and took it to AFL Media’s Paul Bastin, Bianca Smith and Chris Bell. The video was well received by the umpires at the Hall of Fame night and has now reached over 45,000 people across our social media platforms.
