One hundred year old grand final boundary umpire, George (Harold) Smith passed away in Mildura on the weekend.

George umpired the 1946, ’47 and ’48 VFL grand finals.  In his time on the VFL list he umpired 145 games between 1938 and 1949.

George is survived by his wife Ida and family who surrounded him as he passed away peacefully at the Mildura Base Hospital.  George’s funeral will be held in Mildura on Thursday October 16.

George regularly attended the AFL grand final umpires reunion until he became too frail to travel in the past 5 years.  He would travel down by train and bus and his daughter would bring him to the function.  Always one to reminisce about the good old days, George will be sadly missed.
